Normally I avoid design based contests because I feel Lighting Design is too objective. However, quarantine has made me less selective about my creative outlets so I decided to enter the Mike Wood Previs Contest! Check out the video at the bottom of the post!

We were sent a capture file with a plot, set, and actors. The challenge was to design a musical theatre song. I chose this song because I got to see Come From Away on Broadway a few years ago and it was an amazing show. My idea was to highlight the triumphant nature of the people of Gander, Newfoundland as they kick off the show with a confident introduction of themselves. The song transitions into a heartfelt moment as they learn of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I used the cyc to take us out of Gander and into New York City before returning to the original setting.
